WHAT IS POLYVAGAL THEORY?
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, offers a revolutionary understanding of how our nervous system responds to the world around us. At its core, Polyvagal Theory explains how our bodies shift between different states of safety, connection, and survival—affecting everything from how we handle stress to how we engage with others. Our nervous system isn’t just about "fight or flight." Polyvagal Theory reveals that it’s more complex, involving three key states that deeply influence our emotional, physical, and social experiences:
The Ventral Vagal State (Safe and Social)- In this state, we feel safe, calm, and connected. Our body functions smoothly—we can think clearly, engage in meaningful relationships, and experience life with a sense of ease. When we’re here, we are at our best, both emotionally and physically.
The Sympathetic State (Fight or Flight) - When we perceive danger or stress, our nervous system activates the sympathetic state. Our heart rate increases, our muscles tense, and we’re ready to either defend ourselves or escape. While this response is essential for survival, being stuck in this state for too long can leave us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or constantly on edge.
The Dorsal Vagal State (Shut Down or Disconnected) - If a situation feels too overwhelming or threatening, our body may enter the dorsal vagal state. In this state, we can feel emotionally numb, shut down, or disconnected from ourselves and others. It’s a protective response, but staying here can lead to feelings of isolation, depression, and a sense of being "stuck."
Why Polyvagal Theory Matters for Your Well-Being?
Understanding these three states is a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges. Many of us unknowingly get stuck in survival states—constantly stressed or feeling disconnected. By learning to recognize and work with these states, we can begin to shift toward a place of balance, where we feel more grounded, safe, and connected.
Polyvagal Theory also highlights the importance of social engagement for our well-being. When we feel safe in our bodies and our environment, we naturally connect more deeply with others, experience joy, and feel more resilient in the face of stress. This is the magic of our social engagement system—it’s the nervous system’s way of helping us thrive, not just survive.
How You Can Benefit from Polyvagal Theory?
The beauty of Polyvagal Theory is that it doesn’t just explain why we feel anxious, stressed, or disconnected—it also offers us tools to regulate our nervous system and find our way back to calm and safety. Through practices like breathwork, mindful movement, and social connection, we can activate the ventral vagal state and restore balance to our body and mind. Whether you’re dealing with the stress of everyday life, navigating the emotional and physical changes of menopause, or simply wanting to feel more grounded and connected, understanding and applying Polyvagal Theory can help you feel more empowered, resilient, and calm.
Polyvagal Theory is a reminder that your body is always working to help you find safety. By learning to listen to its signals and gently guide it back into balance, you can navigate life’s ups and downs with more ease, understanding, and inner peace.
